Today is Patriot Day. Today we pause to honor the Americans who died as a result of the terror of September 11, including many who demonstrated extraordinary acts of courage and sacrifice.
Twenty three years ago, on September 11, 2001, four airliners were turned by terrorists into weapons. Two struck the World Trade Center Towers in New York, one struck the Pentagon in Arlington, and one was brought to the ground by its passengers into a field in Pennsylvania rather than allow it to also be crashed.
2,977 innocent people were killed in these attacks, including many first responders who rushed to save others. Patriot day is a day of remembrance and reflection; a time to honor the victims, support those who continue to suffer from the effects of the attacks, and reaffirm the values of resilience and unity that defined our nation after these attacks.
I ask you to join with me today in a moment of silence in remembrance of those who died in these attacks against the United States of America 23 years ago today.
