Battlefield Elementary School Teacher Selected as 2022-2023 SCPS Division Teacher of the Year

Battlefield Elementary School Special Education  teacher Mrs. Laura Brooks was selected as Spotsylvania County Public School’s 2022-2023 Division Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Mr. Mark B. Taylor and Deputy Superintendent Mr. Kelly Guempel surprised Mrs. Brooks in her classroom to break the news.

“Laura Brooks is an integral part of our school team,” said Battlefield Elementary School Principal Mrs. Kara Hurley. “Her tireless work benefits all students at Battlefield Elementary.  Laura is always smiling, referring to students as ‘sunshine’ and is a true champion for student success.”

Mrs. Brooks was selected from nominations from across the division. She started at Battlefield Elementary, and with SCPS, in August 2018 after transitioning from working in therapeutic day treatment therapy. She has grown tremendously as an educator in a short amount of time, beginning as a learning disabled teacher and now taking on the role of a behavior support teacher and department chair for special education. Mrs. Brooks is active in the community as a Parks and Recreation soccer coach, participant in the PTO, and is always present for the students and families of Battlefield Elementary.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but Spotsy,” Mrs. Brooks said, wiping away tears as the news of her achievement sunk in. “Or Battlefield Elementary, either.”

“She helps celebrate the small and large victories and her students leave each day knowing she loves them,” said Mrs. Hurley. “She is such a gem, she’s just a great human being.”

Each year, Spotsylvania County Public Schools recognizes individuals who set the standard of excellence in service as Teachers of the Year. Their positive attitude and dedication to our students, staff, and community are one of the many reasons SCPS is a great place to learn and work.
