On February 2, 2023, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) presented to the Board of Education the review and revision process of the 2017 English Standards of Learning. A Timeline for the Review and Revision of the English Standards of Learning is included.
The VDOE is hosting several opportunities for the public to engage, provide feedback, and contribute directly to the review of the 2017 English Standards of Learning. The Standards of Learning identify the essential content, processes, and skills for grade level courses. The 2017 English Standards of Learning can be accessed on the Virginia Department of Education’s website. Public comment may be offered through these community engagement sessions, through this form provided on the Virginia Department of Education website, or by emailing vdoe.english@doe.virginia.gov until March 13, 2023.
Advanced registration is required for all sessions and in-person sessions are limited to 100 participants on a first come first served basis. Confirmed registrants will receive an email providing information about their session and location specific details. The sessions, three in-person and four virtual, will begin with presentations by VDOE staff about the SOL revision process, followed by an opportunity for participants to share feedback about the current English Standards and suggest revisions. The Virginia Department of Education asks that all selected participants commit to collaborating with other participants in attendance and be prepared to
provide quality feedback to help Virginia create best in class Standards for the children of the Commonwealth.
