Ms. Dawn Shelley

Chancellor District - Spotsylvania County School Board

Ms. Shelley has been a resident of Spotsylvania County since 1998. Her two children attended Spotsylvania County Public Schools for grades K-12th and then graduated from college - one on time, one early. Ms. Shelley has a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Education from University of Florida. She has spent most of her career teaching students with disabilities. She has taught in public schools located in Florida, Mississippi, and Virginia. 

Ms. Shelley was elected to the Spotsylvania County School Board in November 2011. She has served as the Chair of the Board in 2015 and 2021 and Vice Chair of the Board in 2017, 2018, and 2020.

As a Board Member, Ms. Shelley strives to:

  • Align budget with Division Strategic Plan.

  • Develop division vision and goals.

  • Use accountability measures.

  • Review budgeting amendments throughout the fiscal year.

  • Collaborate with business and community members to support mission.

  • Design policy to best serve students.

  • Assist in governance.

  • Interview and hire superintendent.

  • Review superintendent’s performance.

  • Collaborate with superintendent for the best needs of the district’s students.

  • Participate in accreditation process.

  • Apply problem solving techniques to complex educational situations.

  • Effectively present complex information to constituents and all stakeholders.

  • Support constituents’ students’ needs.
