Virginia Boys State
What is Boys State?
Boys State is an educational program for high school students founded by The American Legion where they learn about city, county, and state government by participating in a hands-on, week-long simulated government. Participants elect officials, write and pass bills, and hold mock court proceedings, with the program providing lessons on leadership, government structure, and citizenship.
Boys State is among the most respected educational programs of government instruction for high school students.
Who is eligible to participate in Boys State?
High school juniors that possess Outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service to their schools and community.
The applicant should exhibit an interest in the governmental process.
The applicant will have above average scholastic standing.
The prospective delegate and their parents must be residents of the state of Virginia.

Please remember that ALL yearbook photos must be taken by Victor O'Neill Studios. If you did not get your picture taken already and you did not get on the schedule for November, you must schedule an appointment in December if you want your portrait to be in the yearbook.

November senior picture time slots are full. One last-chance session for senior pictures will take place December 1 and 2. Victor O'Neill Studios will make the sign-up available in a few weeks, so keep your eye on the school newsletter for a link. There will NOT be additional sessions opened after these dates!
Let us help you figure out dinner. FBLA is hosting a spirit night at the Cosner's Corner Panera on Monday, November 10, 2025. You can also use code FUND4U for all-day online, Rapid Pick-Up, and delivery orders. In-cafe orders placed between 4–8pm count too. Make sure you show them the flyer or tell them that you are here for the spirit night!
Starting Monday, November 3rd, FBLA will be selling paper purple flowers to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association. This is a contest where the A1 class that raises the most amount of money will receive a donut party after the contest ends on November 20th. Flowers are $0.25/each cash and card payments will be accepted during all lunch shifts and in room 207. The fundraiser can also be support through the SchoolCash online payment portal.
Help FBLA support puppies! Now through January 30th, Ponax FBLA will be hosting a collection drive for Compassion Animal Rescue. The goal is to collect at least 100 items for the rescue. These items include: cleaning supplies such as lysol wipes, scented laundry pods, and dawn dish detergent, in addition to canned pumpkin and dog food, dog treats, leashes, collars, and more. See the poster outside room 207 for a complete list.
Congratulations to the following students for their recognition at this weekend's VHSL Multimedia Championships for their work in last year's school publications:
- Alleigh Sommers won first in the state for Candid Photography and second for Clubs and Organizations coverage
- Hannah Novick won first in the state for literary magazine cover art
- The 2024-25 Yearbook and Newspaper staffs earned a first place ranking
- The 2024-25 Literary Magazine staff earned a trophy class ranking, which is a state championship

This year, we have a variety of fun colors and a new popular brand—Comfort Colors! We're especially excited to offer a shirt geared towards elementary levels this year, as previous designs focused on mental health themes & suicide awareness. We aim to have something for everyone! Shirts will be delivered by early to mid-November and can be picked up from the MHS School Social Worker, Addie Besemer, when they arrive. Thank you!

This year, sophomores raised $141.03 clenching first place, followed by seniors with $126.55, third place was claimed by the freshmen class with $105.76, and juniors raised $58.19.
To seal the class of 2028's victory, at our fall pep rally in November, Ms. Haney will be pied, as well as Dr. Lancaster because we exceeded our $400 goal! All monies raised will be used to provide safe and exciting social activities for children diagnosed with cancer and their families.

Yearbook picture make-ups and retakes for 9th-11th grade students will be Monday, Oct. 20. Students should get their picture taken during a study hall or Pride Time if possible.
This will be the ONLY make-up day for underclassmen.
Students who previously purchased a photo package and would like to retake their photo MUST return their original photo package to the photographer in order to receive a new package. Please contact underclass@vosphoto.com with any questions.
