Spotsylvania County Public Schools News

The Spotsylvania County School Board voted to hire BWP and Associates, a national search firm which specializes in assisting boards that are seeking superintendents. The search process will be led by Dr. Kevin Castner and Dr. E. Wayne Harris of BWP and Associates.

“Our goal is to identify a leader who will lead with a vision and strive for excellence. This is a critical decision for the division, and the Board is committed to hearing from the community,” said Dr. Lorita Daniels, Spotsylvania County School Board Chair.

A critical first step is to identify the characteristics the School Board will be looking for in a new superintendent. The objectives of the public engagement process are threefold:

·         To learn the strengths, needs, and issues of Spotsylvania County Schools (SCPS) to better recruit a slate of candidates to meet SCPS needs.

·         To be able to describe the division’s strengths, needs and issues to the recruited candidates.

·         To engage in the process in such a way that will build community understanding and support for the search.

“There is no decision more important than choosing the best superintendent to lead Spotsylvania County Public Schools,” continued Daniels. “To ensure that our superintendent search process is inclusive, we invite the school community and the broader community to participate in the online stakeholder survey and the community forums.”

The survey will open on April 15, 2024, and will be available on the SCPS website in both English and Spanish. The survey will close at midnight on April 28, 2024.

The community forums are open to the public and will take place on April 16, 2024 and April 17, 2024 at 6 p.m. A translator is available upon request for any of the community forums.

Community Forum Locations:

April 16 - 6 p.m.

·         Post Oak Middle, Auditorium
·         Mt. Hope Baptist Church, 6823 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg

April 17 - 6 p.m.

·         Cedar Forest Elementary, Cafeteria
·         Chancellor High, Auditorium

In addition to the survey and community forums, the search firm will conduct focus groups with a variety of stakeholders. Results of the information received from the community engagement process will be presented to the Board along with a draft profile of the leadership characteristics for the next superintendent by BWP & Associates.
