EVERY DAY COUNTS!
Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% or more of the school year — 17 days per year, or just 2 to 3 days per month. We want to help families stay ahead of this, because absences add up faster than you might expect. Between illnesses, family emergencies, and unexpected circumstances that can arise where students may need to miss school, the days accumulate quickly, and a student may already have more absences than a family realizes. Because some school activities and events do have attendance requirements, planning ahead now helps protect your student's ability to take part in them later in the year. When planning trips or time away, we encourage families to keep possible sick days in mind, since illnesses and other emergencies often come up when you least expect them. As always, thank you for partnering with us to support your student's success! |
Understanding Attendance Codes
AEP — Absent Excused by Parent
Used when a parent or guardian has communicated the reason for the absence and it meets the criteria for a parent excuse. Third-party documentation is not on file.
AE3 — Absent Excused by 3rd Party
Used when supporting documentation has been provided and accepted for the absence (for example, a doctor's note).
AU — Absent Unexcused
Used when no communication has been received from a parent or guardian, or when the absence has otherwise not been excused.
For details about our absence practices, please refer to the Parent-Student Handbook posted online at www.spotsylvania.k12.va.us (under the Parent tab on the homepage).
