All students within Spotsylvania High School are eligible to receive the benefits of a school counseling program that is developmental in nature, preventive in design, and comprehensive in scope. As an integral part of the total educational program, credentialed school counselors ensure access to services so that every student is challenged and supported to reach his/her highest potential.
The mission of Spotsylvania High School Counseling Program is to provide a 9-12 comprehensive, developmental counseling program that addresses the academic, career, and personal/social needs of each student in our schools. The program is delivered through a counseling curriculum, individual planning, system support, and responsive services. In partnership with educators, parents, and the community, credentialed school counselors facilitate the support system to ensure that each student in the district is prepared academically and socially with the knowledge and skills to contribute at the highest level as productive members of society.

This year, SCPS has adjusted our schedule change procedures to maximize our teaching staff in each building. With the new procedure, the last day for students to change their course requests was the last day of school, May 23, 2024. This has allowed each building to build a master schedule that accurately reflects the needs of our students while intentionally utilizing the staff available at each school to maintain smaller classroom sizes and reduce the disruption to student learning in the first few weeks of the school year.
Students are still permitted to make a schedule change if there is a scheduling error (missing a block, two courses scheduled for the same time, the schedule includes a course the student has already earned credit in, or the student has not met the prerequisite for a course, the student has earned an F with a scheduled teacher in a previous year). Scheduling errors do not include a student changing their mind, requesting a teacher change, changing a course to be in class with a peer, changing a class to switch lunch blocks, or being placed in an alternative elective chosen by the student.
Additionally, during the first 9-week interim, students can request to drop a course for a study hall or decrease the level (i.e., AP to Honors; Honors to Standard) based on seat availability. To request a course drop or level change, students must sign into their school email to access and complete the Google form. Schedule change requests require approval from the school counselor and administrator. Requests to change level will not be approved after the first 9 weeks due to pacing and curriculum guides. The school counselors will not be making schedule changes during back-to-school nights. They will be available for a meet and greet only.
The School Counseling Department will make every effort to provide critical, necessary services that will work towards the enhancement, growth and development, and ultimate success of the student academically, socially, and emotionally.
