I am thrilled and humbled to have been entrusted with the principalship of Ni River Middle School. I am blessed to join a dedicated team of educators and families who care deeply for their children’s success. The 24-25 school year marks my twentieth year in education and my ninth year as an administrator. Before becoming an administrator, I taught science and special education for ten years at Robinson Secondary in Fairfax County. As an assistant principal, I have worked in Manassas City at high and elementary school levels. I earned my bachelor's from George Mason University, my master's from George Washington University, and my educational leadership specialist degree from the University of Virginia. I am also a doctoral candidate in Virginia Tech's Educational Leadership and Policy Studies program.

My husband and I are parents of two children. My son Ethan will be starting seventh grade this year, and my daughter Eleanor will be going into the fifth grade. We love being outdoors, exploring nature and science, and managing our apiaries of honeybees.

This year, our themes are Alignment, Engagement, and Leadership. These focus areas are vital for our students and staff as we strive for excellence. By aligning our goals and efforts, engaging actively in the learning process, and fostering leadership skills, we can create a thriving educational environment.

I look forward to continuing to build and strengthen the Falcon community. A strong partnership between home and school is essential to student success. We are going to have an amazing year learning and growing together. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or needs.

I am originally from western Pennsylvania, raised in a small rural town. My wife and I are happy to call Fredericksburg home as we enjoy spending time with our three sons, taking advantage of all the outdoor adventures the area offers.  I earned my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Educational Psychology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2002.  I gained experience in education as a fourth-grade teacher and an Instructional Technology Resource Teacher (K-5) for Stafford County Public Schools.  I continued my education to earn a graduate degree in Educational Leadership: Administration & Supervision at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010.  I then served as an Elementary Assistant Principal in Stafford County Public Schools before joining Spotsylvania County Public Schools as the Assistant Principal at Lee Hill Elementary.  I have spent the past three years as the Principal of Spotswood Elementary.  I am excited about the opportunity to build upon my experience at the elementary level in my next adventure at Ni River.  I am committed to working together to serve our students. It is my passion to continually build our school program to meet the ever-changing and dynamic needs of each and every student.  Relationships are the core of this effort, and I will focus on leading our team to engage, monitor, and sustain connections with their students continually.  We must strive to meet students where they are and guide them to reach their fullest potential.

I welcome open communication, so please reach out with any questions, concerns, or celebrations.  I look forward to connecting with my new school family and being a part of the best middle school in the world!

I am very excited to be part of the Ni River staff as the Instructional Coordinator this year.  I am also part of the clinical faculty of the University of Mary Washington.  I have been in education for slightly over 30 years, and over half of that has been right here in Spotsylvania County.  Before this position, I was an Administrative Instructional Specialist at Parkside Elementary School.  My background also includes teaching fourth grade, third grade, second grade, and Kindergarten.  I received my Master’s in Curriculum & Instruction with Administrative Certification from McDaniel College in Maryland, and a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland.

My two boys, my husband, and I live in Spotsylvania County.  My oldest is attending the University of Mary Washington, and my youngest Freedom Middle School Tiger.  I enjoy reading, watching movies, going on vacation, spending time with family, baking, and eating out.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if I can assist you or your child in any way.  I am proud to be a part of such a wonderful school and to help contribute to our school mission of alignment, engagement, and leadership.

Ms. Bernadette Nolan began her school counseling career in 2001 after earning a Master of Education Degree in Counseling and Development from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, in May 2001. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology/Management Psychology from Averette College in Danville, VA, in June 1985 and has always enjoyed working with children and families.

While earning her graduate degree, she was employed as a Case Manager with the Department of Family Services in the Foster Care & Adoption Division for the County of Fairfax, VA. Since coming to Spotsylvania County in 2001, she has been working with our Ni River Middle School families except for one year in 2009 - 2010 when Ms. Nolan was a high school counselor at Massaponax High School. She feels the middle school years of a child's development are the most exciting years based on the rapid changes in their emotional and social growth, and she continues to learn and grow from her experiences while working with our students and their families.
