What is Apprenticeship Related Instruction?

Apprenticeship training in the US is governed by the Department of Labor and Industry at the Federal level and is managed locally at the state level by the Department of Labor and Industry.   Apprenticeship Related Instruction (ARI) is most appropriate for students who are employed full-time in the industry for which they are apprenticing.  ARI covers all of the theory, policy and code associated with the trade industry.  Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center offers training for the following industries:

  • Electricity

  • Heating, Ventilation, AC and Refrigeration,

  • Plumbing

Qualifications For Being a Registered Apprentice

As a full-fledged employee of the sponsoring company, a registered apprentice completes a minimum of 2,000 hours of supervised on-the-job training and a minimum of 144 hours of related classroom instruction for each year of apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship terms are occupation specific, but the average term is four years (576 hours)

Successful completion of the registered Apprenticeship Program earns the apprentice an Apprenticeship Certificate which is a recognized credential in all fifty states, enabling credentialed apprentices to sit for licensure exams in other states.

All apprentices are registered through their employers with a Department of Labor and Industry.

State Apprenticeship Registration

A student who is a Virginia Registered Apprentice is an apprentice that is working for a Virginia employer and is registered with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry.   Further information about registering as an apprentice: The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry

Registered apprentices who successfully complete the program will receive a nationally accepted State Apprenticeship Certificate.

A non-registered apprentice may take the same courses as Apprentices but will not gain the valuable hands-on training that registered apprentices receive through On the Job Training, nor will they receive the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry certificate after successful completion. Students who complete the course will receive a completer’s certification from the school and may apply their class time if they enter the field within five years.
