Attendance

Regular School Attendance is Important!

Spotsylvania County Public Schools Preschool Programs promote the practice of regular attendance in order for children to benefit from their preschool experience. For children to maximize their learning both academically and socially, children need to be in school consistently and on a regular basis. Research shows that children with chronic absences are at risk for lower educational achievements and children that have poor attendance in preschool tend to continue with poor attendance during their elementary and secondary school years.

It is expected that all students will attend class daily except in the case of illness. If your child has a fever or communicable disease, please do not expose the other children by sending your child to school. If your child is absent from school you will need to call the school office to notify the staff within the first hour of school. Otherwise, you will receive a call from the attendance office. Per SCPS School Board Policy JED, when your child returns to school you must communicate with the school the reason for the absence within 3 days.

If your child misses three consecutive days and the school or Preschool program staff do not hear from you, Preschool staff will contact you and/or your emergency contacts to make a home visit. If Preschool staff are unable to make contact after five consecutive days, a letter will be sent to your home.

If Preschool staff does not hear from your family within five days from the date of the letter, your child will be withdrawn from the program.

When a student shows a history of poor attendance and excessive tardiness, families are required to meet with Preschool administration and develop and attendance plan of action. Our goal is to provide support so that your child may participate in the program on a consistent basis. Your child will have better developmental and educational outcome with regular attendance. If a high rate of absenteeism continues, your child may be disenrolled from the program. Tardiness and early releases are interruptions to the instructional programs.
