Organizations and Clubs at Spotsylvania High School

ACTIVITIES, CLUBS AND SPONSORS

It is hoped and encouraged that Spotsylvania High School students will participate in and take

complete advantage of the extra-curricular activities that are available to all students. All

activities are under the direction of a faculty sponsor. Membership and participation in the

activity is contingent upon the student’s conduct, performance, and contribution to the group.

Anime Club ……………………………………………………...Mrs. Minter and Mrs. Moyer

Students view various forms of Anime, and read the accompanying Manga. Students will

discuss the variations between the two forms and the culture that impacts both

Battle of the Books Team………………………………….…....Mrs. Minter and Mrs. Moyer

Open to all students. Students read 10 carefully selected novels throughout the year. Students

will then compete against other SCPS teams in a district wide event. Battle of the Books will

meet during lunch.

Battle of the Brain Academic Team …………………………..Mr. Black & Ms. Livelsberger

The Battle of the Brain Academic Team completes against other private and VHSL schools in

district matches and televised events (“Challenge 23” on WCVE). Team members reflect

knowledge from the sciences, history, geography, math, pop culture, literature, art, music, and

current events.

Computer Science Honors Society…………………………….. Ms. Benedict

The purpose of the Computer Science Honors Society is to promote and recognize academic

excellence and service among Computer Science students in secondary schools. Students will

have opportunities to participate in workshops, field trips, and service projects. Candidates must

have successfully completed AP Computer Science Principles or AP Computer Science A.

Cyber Knights…………………………………………………..Mrs. Rice

The main purpose of Cyber Knights is to provide students who are interested in cybersecurity

with the technical resources needed to advance their computer security knowledge. The club

achieves this mission by organizing monthly meetings to discuss and practice hands-on

cybersecurity concepts including, but not limited to, network security, digital forensics,

penetration testing, secure coding, cryptography, and reverse engineering. The club will enter

competitions with other cyber clubs in CTF’s (Capture the Flag) or Hackathons.

DECA is the organization that represents marketing students. Marketing prepares students for

careers in business, marketing, and fashion-related industries. This preparation is done through

on-the-job experiences, classroom activities, field trips, and competitions on the district, state,

and national levels. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in

marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Debate is a VHSL sponsored activity that allows students to participate in an argument with

rules. Students are able to sharpen skills in public speaking, critical thinking, research, and

teamwork. Students will read about current events and controversial issues in order to prepare a

good argument on the pro or cons of such issues.

The Drama Club serves as the production agency for all theater performances and membership is

open to all students with an interest in theater arts.

Gamers Club ……………………………………………….…. Mr. Webb

Gamers Club offers an opportunity for students at Spotsy to get together and compete in a

friendly Smash Bros. competition. Our after school competitions occur quarterly with additional

tournaments for those that maintain a certain academic status in all of their classes.

Girls Go Cyber ………………………………………Mrs. Rice

Girls Who Code Clubs are meant for girls to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role

models, and use Computer Science/Programming to change the world.

Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) …Ms. Robinson

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a nonprofit national career and technical

student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in

public and private schools through grade 12. Focusing on the multiple roles of family member,

wage earner and community leader, members develop skills for life through: character

development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge,

and career preparation.

Forensics ……………………………………………………………. Ms. Coffman

Forensics is a VHSL sponsored activity that invites students to participate in various

performance categories. Students can compete in original oratory, extemporaneous speaking,

impromptu, prose and poetry reading, and dramatic and humorous interpretations. Some

categories can be performed with a partner.

Calling all francophiles! The French club will be held about once a month in Madame

Jurewicz's classroom. Come to discuss French culture, French topics, and especially French

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)…………………….. Mrs. Rice and Mr. Payne

Students enrolled in business classes are eligible to join the Future Business Leaders of America,

which deals with business and career planning.

German Club ……………………………………………………….... Mr. Kendall

The purpose of the German Club is to unite students who are interested in German through

cultural trips and experiences.

James Farmer Scholars ……………………………………………... Ms. Robinson

The mission of James Farmer Scholars is to increase the number of African-American youth who

are academically prepared to attempt and succeed in college. At the high school level this is

done through tutoring, assisting in course selection, exposure to cultural activities, college life,

exposure to successful standardized test methods, and assistance in the college admissions

process.

Korean Club ……………………………………………………………..Ms. LaRocco

The Korean Club is for any student interested in learning more about Korean culture, including

language, music, food, etc. The club meets once a month during Focus. Students must sign up

with Ms. LaRocco to attend a meeting.

Latin Club ……………………………………………………………… Mr. Amos

Any student who is currently enrolled in Latin may join the Latin Club. This club is part of the

Virginia Junior Classical League and actively participates in community service as well as club

events and competitions throughout the course of the year.

Literary Magazine, Periphery ………………………………………… Mr. Sellers

Periphery, Spotsylvania High School’s arts magazine, publishes poetry, short stories, plays,

artwork, photography, and musical compositions.

Modern Music Masters (Tri M) ……………………………………….. Ms. Buchanan

The TriM Music club is for highly motivated music students currently enrolled in a musical

performing group. They are required to meet a certain level of proficiency as well as auditions

and extracurricular performing opportunities. Students focus meetings on how to support

younger developing musicians and service using their musical talents.

Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society ………………. Ms. Kiple and Mrs. Newton

The purpose of Mu Alpha Theta is to recognize students who have shown outstanding ability in

math and encourage them to expand their knowledge and expertise in fun ways. Students can

participate in after-school activities, field trips, and special events. A major component of Mu

Alpha Theta is our service component of peer tutoring students in math.

The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) ~ Art Club ………… Ms. Laserna and Ms. Hicks

The purpose of the National Art Honor Society is to inspire and recognize students who have

shown outstanding ability in art. Students can participate in after-school workshops, field trips,

and special projects. Club Requirements include a student must be in an art class and have a 3.0

average or higher in Art for NAHS Membership.

National FFA Organization (FFA).................... Ms. Webb, Mrs. Cerritelli and Ms.

Chambers

FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier

leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Any student

enrolled in an agriculture class that pays their dues is a member and will be provided information

regarding meetings during class and via the Spotsylvania FFA Facebook page.

Spotsylvania High School chapter of the NHS is for those students who have demonstrated

excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. The NHS is a service

organization, dedicated to improving the quality of life for those in our community and school.

NHS meets once a month during Focus.

The purpose of this organization is to recognize and promote scholarship, character, leadership,

and service in the students of secondary school

The purpose of this organization is to recognize and promote scholarship, character, leadership,

and service in the students of secondary school. Students and parents may contact the NSHS

sponsor to obtain further information.

Rocketry Club ………………………………………………...…Mr. Webb

The Rocketry Club will be competing in this year's TARC(Team America Rocketry Challenge).

This is an opportunity to learn about model rocketry, build rockets, launch them and try to

qualify for the national competition held here in Virginia.

The Knight Times is the school newspaper. Anyone interested in writing, editing, and publishing

the school newspaper should enroll in journalism classes.

Students enrolled in various science subjects are eligible to join the Science Club. We are active

in the community and seek to increase the student’s experiences with our local environment,

including field trips and service projects.

Shades of Love…………………………………………………………… Ms. McCray

Shades of Love is open to ALL students. The mission of Shades of Love is to provide a safe,

supportive environment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexsual, Transgrender, Questioning/Queer

(LGBTQ), and Straight youth to meet and discuss sexual orientation and gender issues, to work

to create a school environment free of hate, discrimination, harassment, intolerance, and to end

homophobia and transphobia.

The Spanish Club is open to all students enrolled in Spanish classes or who are interested in

Spanish. The purpose of the club is to create more awareness of and appreciation for Spanish

culture and language.

The SCA is the student governing body of Spotsylvania High School. This organization seeks to

promote leadership, student involvement, and good citizenship by arranging assemblies,

community service projects, fund-raising activities, and social events such as school dances.

Leadership and opportunities in technology, innovation, design and engineering. Members apply

STEM concepts through intracurricular programs .

For those interested in robotics we have a club that competes in the VEX robotics league. We

need innovators, designers, builders, leaders, managers, programmers, drivers, pit crew and

scouts, just to name a few. If you are at all interested in robotics, we have a job for you
