Notice of Contact Tracing Protocol Update

January 25, 2022

Due to the recent changes by the CDC to reduce isolation to 5 days with return to school on day 6 with a mask if fever and symptom free, we received guidance from the Rappahannock Area Health Department and Virginia Department of Health to update our contact tracing process. We are moving to a prioritizing contact tracing process.

This means we will only be contact tracing for the following COVID-19 cases: staff, students involved in athletics and activities or instructional settings in which adhering to mitigation strategies is not practicable and students with siblings in the same household. Only these individuals will provide a line list (these are individuals they have come in contact with during the time of COVID-19 transmission). The school bus and cafeteria/lunch area are not included in contact tracing. Case and line list information will be reported as usual to the Health Department. All other student cases will be reported to the health department without a contact tracing line list. Quarantine guidance will be provided to staff and students exposed to a COVID-19 positive/presumed person in their household.

Since we are no longer completing a line list for each student case, the Health Department recommends that we will send a notification from the school, as needed, to inform parents and staff of reported cases by classroom and/or location. Due to federal privacy laws, we can not share the individual’s name so it will be important that you monitor your child for symptoms especially when you receive a notification that includes your child’s classroom. If your child is sick or showing any COVID-19 symptoms, please keep them home, notify your child’s school, and if possible, complete a COVID test on the 5th day after symptoms have developed.

Thank you for your cooperation and helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Below is a sample email notification that you will receive from the school. If you have any questions about the prioritized contact tracing process, please contact your school nurse or the Office of Health Services.

School-wide Notification - Confirmed Case of COVID-19

School-wide Notification - Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Dear Parents,

The purpose of this notice is to keep all members of our school community informed and to remind everyone to continue to take precautions and monitor for COVID-19 symptoms. We want to make you aware that we have been informed that there was a positive COVID-19 case in the following classroom(s).

It is important to note that school will remain open and in-person as scheduled. Please monitor your child(ren) closely for signs of illness. If your child(ren) shows any symptoms of illness, please keep them home and notify your child’s school. We encourage you to seek guidance from your healthcare provider for testing and care.

Additionally, as per CDC guidance, you may take the following steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Wear a well-fitted 3-ply mask over the mouth and nose to prevent the spread of respiratory droplets.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This is especially important after you have been in a public place or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If hand washing is not available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your arm.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily.

Please contact your school nurse or the Department of Health Services, if you have questions or need additional information. You can also find pertinent details at the Virginia Department of Health’s website at
