POMS Return To Learn Information

August 15, 2020

Hello Post Oak Families –

I would like to thank each of our families for the patience and support that you have displayed as we are preparing for the virtual start to this school year.  Please make note of the following reminders as you work with your student to prepare for the first day of school on Monday, August 17th.

Student Gmail - Teachers sent Google Meet invites to all of their students yesterday.  Students are encouraged to check their Gmail accounts to prepare in advance for their Google Class Meets.  Virtual class meetings will begin with our A1 classes at 8:00 am on Monday.  All Google Class Meets will be assigned through each teacher’s Google Classroom.  These meets are controlled by the teacher.  This is a security feature that will prevent others from entering classes that in which they are not assigned.

Student Schedules - Please note that requests for adjusting student schedules will be processed by our school counselors as quickly as possible.  However, schedule changes are extremely challenging this year due to our planning for the return to hybrid learning which requires smaller class size due to social distancing.

Attached you will find a document that will help with reading your student’s schedule.

1st Week of School Reminders - Students are encouraged to set routines and procedures.  This will help with students to be organized, rested, and prepared for learning daily.  Teachers will focus on building positive relationships, share Distance Learning procedures and help students establish routines and procedures.

Teachers have also shared Google Meet invites with all of their parents.  These Virtual Google Meet and Greets will allow parents/guardians the opportunity to meet their student’s team of teachers.  Please refer to the Patriot Post newsletter that was mailed home and sent electronically for additional Week 1 information.

POMS Distance Learning Helpful Hints Video - I encourage you to take time to view this video that we hope will provide information about our POMS Return to Learn Plan.

Our Patriot Team remains available should you have any questions or concerns.

Have a Wonderful Weekend and Go Patriots!

Good Evening Patriot Families –

I hope this message finds each of our families safe. The Post Oak Team continues to work to prepare for the first day of school on August 17th .

Please make note of the following important updates.

  • Advisory teachers are currently working to contact the students/families in their advisory classes. The purpose of this call is to build a positive connection between home and school. We appreciate your response as teachers are also working to collect information that will assist with our distance learning plans for each of our students.
  • We would like to invite all of our students and families to our Drive Thru Meet and Greet event that will be held on Thursday, August 13th from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm. The purpose of this event is to provide students with an opportunity to meet their teachers, distribute student workbooks and agendas. Families will remain in their vehicles as they drive around the parking lot to meet their teachers and collect learning resources. Chromebooks and laptops will also be available for checkout for students that do not have their own device to use for learning at home. We are still awaiting the delivery of additional Chromebooks. Therefore, we respectfully request that those not needing a device refrain from checking one out at this time. We will provide a device to all students when the new shipment arrives.
  • The release of student schedules is slated for the evening of August 12th. These will be available for view via ParentVue and StudentVue.

Attached you will find our Distance Learning Schedule and information that I previously shared for your review. Thank you again for your educational partnership as we work together to serve the needs of our Proud Post Oak Patriots!

Sincerely,

Scott Belako, Principal

Hello Post Oak Patriot Families –

I hope that this message finds each of our Patriot Families safe and enjoying the last few weeks of summer break.

I wanted to share a few important updates as we work together to meet the needs of all of our families during this unique start to the 2020 – 2021 school year.

Communication - Communication will be critical as we work to provide support remotely.  Please make sure that we have accurate contact information on file to include phone numbers and email addresses.  Our main means of communication will be by email and phone.  Please email our counseling secretary, Ms. Denise Smith at dlsmith@spotsylvania.k12.va.us to update or change your contact information.

Advisory teachers will be working to contact each of their students by phone beginning August 4th – August 14th.  They look forward to getting to know their students!

Required – Enrollment Verification FormAll families have been asked to complete the 2020 Enrollment Verification Form.  Please go to parent.spotsylvania.k12.va.us and click on “I am a Parent” to access ParentVUE.  It is critical that we receive this information as soon as possible.  This information will allow us to develop a learning plan for each of our students based on their learning needs.  Thanks to those that have already completed the form!

Please note that if you select “hybrid” your student will receive in-person instruction as soon as we are approved to teach face-to-face.  If you select “virtual” your student will receive instruction remotely for the 2020 – 2021 school year.  Those that select “virtual” may change to in-person at the end of the first semester.

When Does School Start?  School begins on Monday, August 17th.  Students will attend Google Meets with their teachers to build positive relationships and become familiar with distance learning procedures throughout the first week of school.  Parents and guardians will also be invited to Google Meets so that they can get to know their student’s team of teachers and distance learning procedures.  We will be sharing more information and the first week schedule soon.

What Will Learning Look Like?  Our Distance Learning Model will look very different from what was provided at the end of last school year.  New concepts will be taught through distance learning strategies.  Feedback will be provided to students and work will be assessed and graded.  Attendance will also be recorded during the Google Class Meetings each day.

Please see our attached Distance Learning Schedule that will be implemented when we are teaching 100% virtually this school year.  Students will be working with their teachers each day based on their A day and B day schedule.  All classes will be taught virtually each morning from 8:00 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.  Each block will be 40 minutes long with a 5 minute transition between classes.  All students will end the morning with their Patriot Advisory block.  This time is set aside for our staff to support the social, emotional, and academic needs of each of our Post Oak Patriots.  After lunch all teachers will provide enrichment and remediation (tutoring) opportunities for students as needed.  The afternoon will also provide time for students to work independently on class assignments.

Wednesdays are designated as independent learning days for students.  Please see page 2 of the attached Distance Learning Schedule.  The morning provides families and students with the opportunity to reach out to their team of teachers.  Advisory time on Wednesday will consist of virtual, email, and phone check-ins.  This time will allow each advisory teacher to check-in with their students.  Staff will be available Wednesday afternoons to provide remote support to students as needed.

Student Attendance and Grading Procedures - Attendance will be recorded daily during virtual Google Meets, phone calls, and work submission.  Teachers will provide students feedback during virtual Google Meetings and phone conferences.  Feedback will also be provided on student work submission.  Student work will be assessed and graded.

SCSPS Devices to Support Distance Learning - POMS will provide students with Chromebooks to support distance learning.  SCPS has ordered hotspots for those that require internet access.  However, a cell signal is required for the hotspots to operate.  Please be on the lookout for Chromebook check-out distribution dates!

What If I Live In an Area That Does Not Have Internet Access?  We understand that many of our families live in beautiful rural areas of the county that do not have internet access, or a strong cellular signal.  Please do not stress.  We will work to provide distance learning options for those that are impacted by limited internet access.  However, it is important that we receive your student’s Enrollment Verification Form so that we are able to meet each of our student’s learning needs.

Thank you in advance for your patience and partnership as we work together to support our Patriots during these challenging times.  We are here to help.  Please contact the school office Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm.

Have a great week!

Scott Belako, Principal

July 26, 2020

Greetings Post Oak Patriot Families,

Yesterday the school division shared the updated Return To Learn document that provides guidelines for beginning the 2020 – 2021 school year.  We will be returning to school on August 17th.  The week of August 17th - August 21st will consist of a series of virtual meetings that will allow our staff to make connections with our students and families.  This week will also be a time that we establish routines and procedures for our distant learning model.  New instruction is scheduled to begin the week of August 24th.

Our Distance Learning Model will look very different from what was provided at the end of last school year.  New concepts will be taught through distance learning strategies.  Feedback will be provided to students and work will be assessed and graded.  Attendance will also be recorded during the virtual class meetings each day.

It is important for all of our families to complete the Enrollment Verification Form in ParentVue if you have not done so already.  This information is critical as we plan to meet the Distant Learning needs of each family.  Please take a few moments to complete the questionnaire as soon as possible.

We are available to assist should you have any questions or are in need of support. You may contact the school office at 540-582-7517.  Your educational partnership and patience is appreciated as we work together as a school community.
