    1 or 2 YEAR Program available to ninth and tenth graders

    This is a great program for students who may be interested in continuing at the Career and Technical Center in Auto Collision Repair, Heating, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration, Auto Service Technology or any of the Construction Related Trades

    Metal Trades I (9th Grade)  8672     Credit:  2 Units Offered Grade 9   

    Prerequisites:  There is an application process for this class, see Middle School counselor

    Students will work individually and in groups on a variety of shop activities including metal art, tool repair, and metal construction projects.  Students will become familiar with the many uses of metalworking.  Students will learn safety procedures, the use of a variety of hand tools, tool fitting, layout work, and sheet metal work.  In addition, students will be introduced to  Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, and Plasma Arc Cutting Processes.  Workplace readiness skills of teamwork, communication, problem solving, positive work ethic and integrity are emphasized.

    Metal Trades II (10th Grade)  8673     Credit:  2 Units Offered Grade 10 

    Prerequisites:  There is an application process for this class, see High School counselor

    Metal Trades 2 will build on many of the areas covered in the Metal Trades 1 (9th Grade) program, including Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, Oxyfuel Cutting, Torch Brazing, and Plasma Arc Cutting Processes.  Students will also be introduced to blueprint reading, weld inspection, and metallurgy.  During the spring semester, students will be given the opportunity to explore other vocational areas.  A student need not have taken Metal Trades in 9th grade to take the 10th grade class. The Metal Trades (10th Grade) program is a two-credit program offered in the afternoons at the Career and Technical Education Center.  This program is especially appropriate for students thinking about a construction or transportation career and technical program for their 11th and 12th grade years. Workplace readiness skills of teamwork, communication, problem solving, positive work ethic and integrity are emphasized.

    Additional Information:

    Students are expected to wear appropriate safety gear and uniforms in the lab   Students are expected to join the Career and Technical Student organization SkillsUSA and SkillsUSA Virginia
