Getting to Know Mrs. Holmes

What college did you attend?

I received my Bachelor’s degree from Radford University (RU) in Community Health and my Master’s Degree from RU in Guidance and Counseling – Student Personnel.  I later went back to RU for teacher certification.  I received my certification in administration and supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

What is your experience as a teacher?

I was a third grade classroom teacher in Stafford County for one year before coming to Spotsylvania County.  I taught 3rd grade at Chancellor Elementary and students on homebound in 2nd and 4th grades. I also served as a school counselor while I lived in West Virginia.

What is your experience as an administrator?

I first went into administration as the administrative intern at Spotsylvania Middle School.  Following that, I became the assistant principal and then the Principal at Riverview Elementary where I served for a total of 11 years.  This is my third year as the proud Principal at Wilderness Elementary, home of the wildcats!

What is your favorite aspect of school?

My favorite part of the school day is visiting in classrooms with the students and teachers.  It is amazing to see students learning and engaged in activities throughout the school day.  I am very passionate about students building on their strengths and being successful each day.  Each student has the potential to learn and grow each day.

What are some of your hobbies?

My favorite pastime is playing golf.  I will be on a golf course any time I can.  Baseball is a game that I watch often especially when the St. Louis Cardinals are playing.   I love to take pictures to capture the many wonderful things that are going on each day.  I enjoy having fun and making others smile.  If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours!

Tell us about your family.

My family is very special to me.  My husband, Don, is from St. Louis and is retired from the United States Marine Corps.  He is very supportive of my career as an educator.  My daughter, Stephanie, is married to Josh who is a nurse. They live in Martinsville where Stephanie works as a social worker. They are parents to Callie Paige and expecting their first son in July. They also have a daughter sweet Emily Beth who is in second grade. Zachary, my son, is married to his high school sweetheart, Ashley, who is a special education teacher in Spotsylvania County.  Zachary works at the State Department in Diplomatic Security.  My furry family member is my dog, Cody.  He is a Shih Tzu and loves attention.  My mother lives in Abingdon, VA, my hometown, and will often come for a visit to Fredericksburg.  I have five brothers and sisters who I love dearly.   I am blessed to have a wonderful work family at Wilderness Elementary.  I am proud to be a WILDCAT!
