HIgh School Student Resources for College
The Virginia Department of Education has provided the following information about resources for students applying to college provided by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), and of recent clarification to SCHEV’s guidance on domicile and eligibility for in-state tuition rates.
The 1-2-3 Go! Initiative
The 1-2-3 Go! initiative is a series of informational and hands-on events providing resources to help Virginia students and families through the college application process. The initiative includes assistance in: (1) finding the best fit; (2) meeting application deadlines; and (3) determining financing – in order to GO to college.
Super FAFSA Project Virginia: This annual statewide initiative is designed to increase students’ completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and is hosted at specific Virginia high schools. Senior students and their families receive hands-on assistance completing the FAFSA, as well as valuable information through webinars and downloadable materials. Specific dates, times and locations are listed on the Super FAFSA Project page.
Virginia College Application Week: This national initiative, held at select high schools across the Commonwealth, is designed to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential. Virginia College Application Week provides students hands-on college application assistance and resources, including application fee waivers and informational materials. Students participating in the event are encouraged to submit at least one college application during the week.
Clarification in Guidance on Domicile and Eligibility for In-State Tuition
At its July 17, 2018 meeting, SCHEV added clarifying language to its Guidelines for Determining Domicile and Eligibility for In-State Tuition Rates regarding the process for determining eligibility for in-state tuition. These clarifications increase standardization of the process across institutions.
The amendments specify the process for determining whether certain students qualify for in-state tuition even if their parents are not domiciled in Virginia. Examples of students who may qualify for in-state tuition include students who are homeless, students with incarcerated parents, students whose parents do not have an immigration status that permits domicile, or students raised in Virginia by a relative.
Students in unusual circumstances are encouraged to talk to the domicile officer at their preferred college to learn about the available options for qualifying for in-state tuition.
