A Message From Our Principal

    Greetings Tigers!

Welcome to the unprecedented 2020 - 2021 school year at FMS!  Though we will start the school year meeting virtually, the FMS family is looking forward to meeting and getting to know your students.  FMS is an accomplished school and has many reasons to celebrate.  Students have an opportunity to participate in a rigorous academic program with great teachers, a terrific fine arts program, and an incredible student athletic program.

Alongside the amazing programs students can be involved in here at FMS are the core characteristics of being Responsible, Productive and Respectful.  These are the key Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) tenets that we believe make successful students and a positive school climate. At the beginning of the year we will virtually discuss and take note of what each of these look like in the online environment, classroom, hallway, lunchroom and restrooms.  By displaying these characteristics, students can earn pride cards to win fun and exciting prizes at lunch.

FMS is a collaborative organization that encourages team and department level planning, creative and engaging instruction, and incorporation of appropriate technology in the classroom while maintaining a nurturing and structured environment.

FMS Mission Statement - Freedom Middle School provides opportunities for a diverse population to become lifelong learners, effective communicators, and critical thinkers in an ever-changing society.

We will also provide extensive remediation for students not meeting benchmark standards and develop virtual and in-class ways to serve underachieving students needing intervention. FMS is proud of the fact that the school has received the Governor’s award for academic performance on three different occasions.  FMS has received the Blue Ribbon Music School Award ten times since 2003. We are the only school in Spotsylvania County Public Schools to achieve this honor.

Once restrictions are lifted, Freedom Middle School has an array of after school activities for students to participate.  We have a growing number of students who engage in our STEM program after school to learn and explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics activities.  If you have a budding journalist, the Literary Magazine is a creative way to express thoughts through writing. Cafe Book and MS6 are reading programs designed to encourage and support student literacy.  Other exciting clubs and programs include the Media Team, Debate, Chess, 24 club, Shift club, Dance team, Ecology club, SCA, FCA, NJHS, Certamen (Latin) and the Future Scholars Program.

It is my wish that each student find his/her niche and engage with the activity that matches their interest and passion.  If I can further assist in making your child’s middle school experience exceptional, please call, email or stop by.
