Q & A with...Mr. Robert MacDonaldPrincipal
What school did you last work at? Prior to being appointed as the principal here at Spotsylvania Elementary, I had worked at Courthouse Road Elementary School for five years as the assistant principal.
Did you work at any other schools in Spotsylvania County? Oh geez, where have I NOT worked? I started off teaching fifth grade at Battlefield Elementary School for two years and then moved to Riverview Elementary where I taught fifth grade for another two years. I then moved to Massaponax High School where I taught Algebra I and Geometry. In 2005 I moved here to Spotsylvania Elementary where I was the administrative intern for almost two years. During March of 2007 I was promoted to assistant principal over at Smith Station Elementary where I stayed for five years before moving to Courthouse Road Elementary (the county’s largest elementary school) where I worked for five years.
What grade(s) did you teach? Let’s see, I have taught two years in third grade, four years in fifth grade and then three years teaching math at the high school level.
Where were you born? I was born and raised in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania (outside of Pittsburgh- GOOOOOO Steelers!!!!)
Where did you go to school? I graduated from Bethel Park High School (a very long time ago)
What was your favorite book when you were younger? I loved reading the series The Great Brain by John Dennis Fitzgerald. But, I also really enjoyed the series Encyclopedia Brown, A Boy Detective by Donald Sobol. Not sure if they are still in print, but I would always go to the library and pick up one of those books.
What college did you attend? I graduated from Saint Francis College (of Loretto), which is a very small college in Pennsylvania, with my undergraduate degree (in Elementary Education). I received my master’s degree from George Mason University and then I earned my administrative certification from VCU.
How old are your children? I have one son who graduated from Courtland High School this past May and will be attending UVA this year.
What was your favorite subject when you were in school? I loved math and anything to do with numbers.
What is your favorite football team? Absolutely the Pittsburgh Steelers!!!!!
What is your favorite sport? During my entire high school and college career, I ran cross country and track. I then went on to coach cross country and track for 9 years at the high school level (when I first began my education career).What are your hobbies? I would have to say that when I am not working, I love spending time with my son/family, relaxing (either with a good book or my favorite show) or doing some form of exercise.540-582-5445

What school did you last work at? I worked at Chancellor Elementary School and I also served as the Interim Assistant Principal at Parkside Elementary.
Did you work at any other schools in Spotsylvania County? I have only been in Spotsylvania County for the last 5 years, but I worked in Caroline County for 8 years. In Caroline, I worked at Madison Elementary School.
What grade(s) did you teach? My first year of teaching was spent in a 1st grade classroom and the last eight years have been spent in kindergarten.
Where were you born? I was born in Auburn, New York , but only lived there for a short time. I lived in Scranton, PA until I was 6 and then I moved to Virginia. I have lived here for the past 38 years!
Where did you go to school? I graduated from Chancellor High School! I met my husband there and we have been married for almost 25 years!
What was your favorite book when you were younger? My favorite book when I was younger was The Trumpet of the Swan. When I was a little older I also loved the Nancy Drew series. I loved mysteries!
What college did you attend? I received my undergraduate degree and my master’s degree from the University of Mary Washington.
How old are your children? I have a daughter who is 25 and a son who is 20. My daughter recently graduated from Longwood University and my son is a junior at Mary Washington University.
What was your favorite subject when you were in school? Reading...I love to read! I also really enjoyed history! My favorite teacher was my 7th grade history teacher...Mr. Sutter. He had a way of bringing history to life!
What is your favorite football team? To be honest... I don’t really watch football, but my dad would be very disappointed if I didn’t choose the Buffalo Bills as my favorite team!
What is your favorite sport? Baseball!What are your hobbies? I love spending time with my family, reading, and baking. I also love DIY projects! My husband gets very nervous when he sees me on Pinterest!540-582-5445
