Welcome New Families!
Welcome to Battlefield Elementary School! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our school. Our school mascot is the soldier and our colors are red and blue. Battlefield has a student population around 650 in grades k – 5. Our boundary lines have remained fairly stable. In 2002, we added a new subdivision (Cambridge) to our school family and in 2005 we welcomed about 50 students from Smith Station Elementary.
Battlefield was designed as an “open school”, but has always functioned rather traditionally. Special attention is given to planning and collaboration among grade level teams. We think the open space encourages a respectful and cooperative spirit. Several programs are in place to support student learning: Reading Resource, PALS, ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages), Title I, Speech, SOL Remediation, Learning Disabilities, and SCOPE (Gifted Education).
School-wide accomplishments include accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Accreditation by the State of Virginia on standards set. We have been recipients of: The Board of Education’s VIP Excellence Award, The Board of Educations’ VIP Competence to Excellence Award, and 2010 Distinguished Title I School. Our teachers host a morning Running Club, a Speech Club, a Reading Club, a Student Council Association, Stem and Maker Space sessions, and a Daily News Program.
Our staff is a highly motivated group of professionals who are committed to growing and learning in their profession. Each year we participate in a Teachers as Readers program. Every month we dedicate staff meeting time to the study and discussion of current educational research. We meet in grade level teams and across grade levels to discuss teaching strategies that impact student learning. Our teachers have structured their own professional development specifically designed to meet the needs of their learners. Our focus is on the positive and the entire staff has internalized the FISH! Philosophy (Choose Your Attitude, Be Present, Make Their Day, and Play!)
As newcomers to our school, you should know that you are already a member of our Parent Teacher Organization. Our parents volunteered over 4,000 hours last year and that total does not include the time contributed after school hours! We know that you will want to be involved and there are many opportunities for you to contribute…volunteer in a classroom, chaperone field trips, tutor, bake a dish, share your expertise and teach an after school class…to name a few. The PTO posts volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. Contact them at firstname.lastname@example.org…….. I am sure there is an area in which you can lend your expertise.
