Message from the Principal, Dr. Sheila Smith:
Welcome to Battlefield Middle School, home of the “Warriors.” BMS serves the central portion of Spotsylvania County and is home to 800 students in grades 6-8. We are one of seven middle schools in Spotsylvania County. Our school offers a comprehensive middle school program designed to meet the intellectual, social, and emotional needs of middle school age children. BMS is accredited by the Virginia Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Both achievements are marks of quality. The curriculum provides all students with instruction in the areas of English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Health/Physical Education. A variety of electives are offered including Art, Band, Chorus, Computers, Orchestra, Technology, Work and Family Studies, World Languages, and offerings of a second language in French, German, Latin, or Spanish. Special programs are offered to boost skills via a Reading Workshop program, Algebra Readiness program, and Remediation Recovery classes. Exceptional learners are serviced via our SCOPE program for gifted students or special education classes for students with different learning needs.
BMS operates on an alternating day block schedule. Students have four classes one day and four on the other day. Classes include English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, and electives. The schedule for sixth graders includes daily English, daily science and social studies for a semester each, daily math for the general math track and one elective on alternate days, alternate day math for pre-algebra students with two electives, and alternate day PE and Health for all sixth graders. All 6-8 general math track students attend daily math classes. BMS faculty members are dedicated and committed professionals who believe in continuous improvement and attend professional development activities on a regular basis. Each teacher takes pride in teaching the curriculum using current best practices and strives to provide an environment that is warm, caring, and nurturing. All teachers communicate via email; use electronic grade book software titled Synergy, communicate with parents with the use of ParentVue (an on line resource for parents to check their child’s grades, attendance, lunch balance, etc.) and most integrate technology into classroom lessons.
Our after school program offers eight sports and a variety of clubs and organizations, which meet throughout the year from 2:50 until 5:00 PM. Students in all grades 6 through 8 are eligible to participate in athletics with the exception of football. At this time, only 7th and 8th grade students are eligible to participate in football.
BMS parents and our community value education and are supportive of school programs, staff, and the PTO. We practice the “FiSH!” philosophy which asks us to choose our attitude, make someone’s day, be there for each other, and play. I invite you to review our website to learn more about our school. If you are new to the area, please take time to visit the rich history of the area. Check out the county website to learn more about tourist attractions and Spotsylvania County. As always, feel free to email, call, or stop by whenever you can.
