Spotlight on SCPS Art Department

  • Virginia School Board Association VSBA:

Local school board members were treated to an impressive display of creativity and faced some tough decisions in selecting the 2018 winners of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Regional Art Contest this Spring. The VSBA Regional Art Contest was started in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia’s public school students. For each of the nine VSBA regions, a winner is chosen for the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Student art from the elementary, middle, and high school levels represented each school division in the competition, which was judged at the regional forum for area school board members. We are so proud to report that we had winners at all level! Our winners are as follows:

    • Elementary Regional First Place winner is  Alessandra Dixon, Fifth Grade Salem Elementary, art teacher Jeanie Carr.
    • Middle Regional First Place winner is Daynija Davis , Eighth Grade, Freedom Middle School, art teacher Andrew Beckers.
    • HIgh Regional Second Place winner!  Calista Reiken, Twelfth Grade  Massaponax, art teacher Elizabeth Carter Corbin.

Congratulations to this year’s Spotsylvania County Virginia School Boards Association Art Contest winners and their teachers. The first place art will be framed and displayed in the offices of the VSBA in Charlottesville and the Richmond offices of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction for one year.
