Master’s Degree in Education concentrating on Curriculum and Technology
Janet (Keyser) Baker began teaching high school students in Spotsylvania County in 1993. She had been working for the Free Lance Star radio stations at that time covering news at the national, state and local levels. Prior to working in Fredericksburg, Baker was an editor at Channel 8 in Richmond where she began as a college intern while working on her Bachelor’s Degree from V.C.U. in Journalism. She also interned at Q 94 which ended up also turning into a part time job that lasted several years while in college. Baker grew up near Lynchburg, Virginia but she is originally from Philadelphia.
Teaching was not a career Mrs. Baker had entertained while working in the media until one day an ad appeared in the newspaper looking for someone to begin the “Multi-Media Program” at what was then called, the Spotsylvania Vocational Center. A few years (more like many) and some name changes occurred and now the programs she teaches have evolved into Intro to Video Production, Advanced Video Production and Media Pathways at the Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center. In between, Baker earned her Master’s Degree in Education concentrating on Curriculum and Technology. Technology changes have been incomprehensible throughout her tenure at S.C.T.C. Staying current with technology is a challenge but one she has enjoyed.
Baker is married to a teacher and their son is in college. He says teaching is too hard so he’s working on his business degree at J.M.U. The Baker’s enjoy baseball, spending time with family and friends and they love seeing their former students come back to share their life stories.
