Courtland Cubs School Counseling Program

  • Hello Cougar Cubs Family! My name is Chris Smith and I am very excited to be joining Courtland Elementary as the school counselor this year. I recently completed the Masters in School Counseling program from Liberty University and have also earned my National Certified Counselor (NCC) status. Our counseling program at Courtland Elementary strives to adhere to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) model, and is designed to foster the academic, career, and personal/social development for all students. To meet this goal, the counseling program consists of, but is not limited to, the following components:

    • Classroom Guidance: Classroom guidance is the way to reach entire classrooms of students. Lessons may include topics such as responsibility, peer pressure, individuality, study skills, social skills, and kindness.
    • Small Group Counseling: Small groups allow students to strengthen skills amongst peers who may be struggling with similar concerns. Small group sessions are held once a week for 4 to 6 weeks and are focused around a single concern or topic. The groups usually consist of 4 to 6 students and each session last around 30 minutes. Parent/Guardian consent is required for student participation in small group counseling sessions.
    • Individual Counseling: Individual counseling is the way for counselors to see students who are experiencing a particular concern. Parents, teachers, and other staff may recommend a student for individual counseling. Individual sessions may only be a one-time visit or may include multiple visits over an extended period of time. Parent/Guardian consent is required for student participation for any individual counseling sessions outside of a one-time visit. Students can also meet with the counselor occasionally through the year for less serious concerns.

I am looking forward to getting to know all of our families and students. All of us at CES this year are focused on being driven for students, fueled by enthusiasm, and I am excited to be a part of that journey. If there is anything that I can help you or your student with this school year or if you would like to know more about my role as the counselor, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
