IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING REVISED ATTENDANCE POLICY
Beginning September 5, 2017, SCPS will implement new attendance reporting practices to comply with Virginia Compulsory Attendance Law 22.1-254. Per updated state regulation, the following changes will be effective from the start of the 2017-18 school year:
Please note: these changes apply only to unexcused absences.
- At the fifth unexcused absence, the school is required to initiate an attendance improvement plan.
- At the sixth unexcused absence, the school is required to have an attendance conference with the student’s parent/guardian.
- At the seventh unexcused absence, the division is required to contact the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court intake to file a complaint alleging the student is a child in need of supervision (CHINSup) or to institute a proceeding against the parent/guardian.
As a reminder, upon returning to school, students who are absent must bring a note, signed by a parent/guardian, stating the reason for absence. This note should be turned into the school office. For more information about our absence practices, please reference page 15 of the 2019-20 Parent-Student Handbook that is posted online at www.spotsylvania.k12.va.us under the Parent tab on the homepage. A copy of the handbook will also be sent home with each student by the end of the first week of school.
Daily and punctual school attendance is essential to each student’s academic development. We appreciate your support in ensuring your child attends school. If you have any questions regarding the new attendance policy requirements, please contact your child’s school.
EXCUSED ABSENCES - Notes for excused absences are due on the very next day after a student’s absence. Please bring the note to the Attendance Office (located in the main office). Thank you.
EARLY DISMISSAL - A student who wishes to leave school before his/her regular dismissal time must bring a note signed by a parent to the attendance office between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. on the day he/she wishes to be dismissed early. The note should include the date, the student’s name, grade, a telephone number of the parent/guardian who signed the note and the specific reason for the dismissal. If a parent/guardian is sending a note via email, it must be signed by a parent/guardian and received in the attendance office by 7:35 a.m. A student may not leave school at any time during the day without a dismissal slip. Leaving school without permission will result in disciplinary action. We cannot accept early dismissal requests over the telephone.
Students are reminded that a “false note” is any written document presented to a school staff member which has been falsified and/or altered after the parent or guardian has signed it. Presentation of a “false note” will result in disciplinary action. Parental notes received after the presentation of the “false note” will not render the note valid.
ANTICIPATED ABSENCES - Requests for approval of absences which will result from family trips or other foreseeable reasons must be submitted in writing and approved by the principal in advance. The determination of these absences as excused or unexcused will be based in part on the number of previous absences and the student’s academic standing. The pre-arranged absence forms are in the Attendance Office (located in the main office).
TARDY POLICY- Any student who comes to school late will still be signed in at the desk in the main office. No student will be admitted to class after the bell without a tardy slip.
Any student who remains after school without documented reason (i.e. you have not signed up to stay for a club, sport or activity) will be subject to disciplinary consequences.
MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS - It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for make-up assignments after an excused absence.
Students have a maximum of three school days to complete work missed. If a student is to be absent two or more consecutive days and feels well enough to study at home during an illness, the parent should contact the guidance department, 540-786-2606 ext. 5021, to request assignments before 9:00 a.m.***Parents and students may also contact teachers directly through ParentVue and StudentVue.***
