H1N1 Flu Information - Division Plan

VACCINE RECALL...On December 23, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a Health Alert that vaccine manufacturer, Medlmmune, was recalling certain lot numbers of the H1N1 nasal spray vaccine (FluMist) due to a shortened shelf life of certain lots.  Spotsylvania County Schools DID NOT administer any of the Medlmmune Monovalent 2009 H1N1 influenza nasal spray vaccine with the recalled lot numbers.

VACCINE RECALL...On December 15, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a Health Alert regarding a recall of certain H1N1 Flu Vaccine.  The staff of Spotsylvania County Schools has checked that statement closely and determined that it DOES NOT involve any of the vaccine administered by the school divisionParents who had a child vaccinated by Spotsylvania County Schools do not have to be concerned about this recall.  Any questions may be addressed to Mrs. Patricia Smith, Director of Health Services at 582.5125, ext. 1840.

TERMINATION OF SCHOOL-BASED H1N1 CLINICS...This fall, Spotsylvania County Schools assisted the Rappahannock Area Health District with the timely vaccination of approximately 4,300 students and staff members.  That assistance was provided in response to a request from the Health District.  Seven large-scale clinics were planned and operated through the voluntary efforts of Spotsylvania School Nurses and nurses from Mary Washington Hospital.  Because no school division funds had been budgeted for such an activity, funds which were planned for other activities were diverted to the clinics.  A total of approximately $6,800 was spent by the school division to provide these clinics at no cost to the public.

Now that the H1N1 Flu vaccine has become widely available and the Spotsylvania County Health Department (540.507.7400) has begun to hold regular H1N1 vaccination clinics for the public, the school division will not hold additional clinics and is directing all requests for vaccination to the Health Department.  The school division will contact all children under the age of ten who received a vaccination, advising them that they need to receive a second dose.

Any questions may be addressed to Mrs. Patricia Smith, Director of Health Services at 582.5125, ext. 1840.
